In 1924, David Trevas, an aspiring young entrepreneur, wanted to start his own tool business. His target market was the multitude of marine and auto shops throughout Queens and Long Island, New York. He opened his first store at 5 Court Square in Long Island City, New York, and established a reliable delivery system that assured his accounts they would get the tools they needed on time. The Thirties & Forties The key to the growing business was having inventory. Customers knew that they could rely on Travers Tool to have it in stock. From warehousing to customer service, from order picking to outside sales, the next generation of Travers came to understand the importance of consistently reliable service. Multiple delivery solutions were offered to customers. Relationships with a fast growing delivery company known as UPS established next day service for the local market. The Fifties Growth was proportional to good customer service. Travers Tool expanded its competitive advantage; a great selection of tools, all in stock. The Sixties In 1967, Travers Tool produced its first mail-order catalog. It became the catalyst for significant growth. Recognizing that a catalog is only as good as the delivery that goes along with it, Travers Tool developed a preferred account relationship with UPS. The Seventies Travers continued to integrate new technology within the company to improve responsiveness to the customer. The introduction of an 800 telephone number put Travers within the reach of anyone across the nation. The Eighties Travers Tool completed the construction of a newer, larger, completely modern facility in New York. as well as a second 75,000 square foot distribution center in Duncan, South Carolina. The company recognized the development of a global economy and set up a new European sales and distribution center in France named Otelo. The Nineties A distribution center was opened in Mexico, and offices were established in Canada. Otelo's success permitted the company to move into a larger facility in Conflans, France. It is this history that will bring the core values of customer service into the year 2000. The Year 2000 and Beyond Travers proudly celebrates its tradition of providing unparalleled customer service to the metalworking industry. For over 80 years, Travers has measured success just as its founder did - one satisfied customer at a time. This dedication, compiled with innovative thinking, has led to tremendous growth in Travers product offering, with over 7,000 new items added this past year alone. This wide expansion of their product selection has led to the inclusion of welding equipment, woodworking tools, unique specialty cutting tools, generators, and a variety of safety and material handling innovations. With the introduction of OTMT machinery, power tools and safety products, Travers now provides the industry's most cost efficient means to a safer and more productive shop.
